Neymar Returns to Brazil Squad for World Cup Qualifiers After 17-Month Absence

Brazilian star Neymar has been recalled to the national team for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Colombia and Argentina, marking his return after a 17-month injury layoff. The 33-year-old forward, Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 79 goals in 128 appearances, last played for the national team in October 2023 when he suffered an ACL injury against Uruguay.

Since recovering, Neymar has rejoined Santos, the club where he began his career, and has been gradually regaining form. In seven matches, he has scored three goals and provided three assists, showing signs of his old brilliance. His performances have convinced head coach Dorival Junior to bring him back into the squad for the crucial qualifiers.

Brazil has struggled in his absence, currently sitting fifth in the South American qualifying standings, seven points behind leaders Argentina. They have lost four of their 12 matches so far, putting pressure on the team to secure direct qualification. Dorival Junior emphasized that Neymar’s return should not come with excessive expectations, stating, "Let’s give him the confidence to develop to the best of his ability. We were waiting for him to return, and now we have the chance."

Neymar’s last club stint with Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia was marred by injuries, limiting him to just seven appearances in 18 months. He terminated his contract in January to return to Santos on a short-term deal, hoping to rediscover his form ahead of the 2026 World Cup, which he has confirmed will be his last.

With Neymar back, Brazil will look to regain momentum as they face Colombia on March 21 and Argentina five days later. Fans eagerly await to see if the star forward can help steer the team back on course.
